Road to Patagonia Documentary

Road to Patagonia (winner of Best Film, Best Documentary and Best ‘Byron’ Film at the 2022 Byron Bay Film Festival) follows ecologist Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure, surfing the west coast of the Americas while travelling by motorbike; from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia.

But deep in the wilderness — alone with the wolves and the bears — Matty’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces.

Using a Sony a7S, Canon 5D MkII and GoPro, Matty shot the entire 50,000 km journey himself – joined by his newfound travel companion, Heather Hillier. Matty brought the film to RAVEL wanting us to remove the digital characteristics of the footage, and crafting a look and feel that was reflective of the story.

We then developed an overall filmic look with Matty in DaVinci Resolve that was reminiscent of pre-digital holiday snaps, with an image pipeline that worked across all the footage and was easily adjustable to each stage of their journey – both geographically and emotionally. From the warm, pinkish tones of love and elation in Mexico, to the grueling, cold and uncertain conditions they faced as they venture south, the film is a kaleidoscope of colour and emotion.

The film was graded over five days and will screen at the Screenwave International Film Festival Preview Gala on March 10th. The session is sold out but stay tuned for more screenings! For more info visit theroadtopatagonia.com
