City of Gold Coast

The ARRC

The Client

The City of Gold Coast approached Ravel to develop a series of public-facing animated videos explaining the Advanced Resource Recovery Centre project, a new integrated recycling and energy precinct. The ARRC was designed to boost recycling performance, increase recovery of recyclable materials and generate energy from residual waste, supporting a circular economy and reducing waste sent to landfill by up to 97% by 2035.

The Challenge

With landfills expected to reach capacity within the next decade, the City of Gold Coast needed a public communications campaign to bring the ARRC's story to the public. Ravel was engaged to produce a multi-part animated explainer video series to educate and engage a broad audience, using clear visual storytelling, motion graphics and data-driven animation to communicate why the ARRC is critical for the Gold Coast's long-term sustainability.

Ravel's Solution

With the ARRC yet to begin construction at the point of production, Ravel adopted a stylised 2D animation style enriched with cel-shaded 3D elements, a deliberate artistic choice that kept the visual design free from committing to technical specifications that might still be subject to change. The animation and motion design were built around flexible, concept-level visual storytelling, with a narrative arc that guided viewers on a journey through the Gold Coast region's future of waste management.
